Organize income and expense categories

Use shared system categories or household custom categories to organize transactions and budgets.

Overview

Categories describe what a transaction is for. A payee identifies who received or provided the money; a category describes its purpose. Consistent categories make spending reports and budget tracking easier to understand.

The list distinguishes System categories from Custom categories belonging to your household.

Create a custom category

  1. Search Categories first to avoid creating another label for the same purpose.
  2. Choose Add New and enter a name.
  3. Choose an income or expense direction. To make a subcategory, select a parent; the child follows the parent's direction.
  4. Choose an icon if useful, then save.

For example, a synthetic household might place a custom Household supplies category under a suitable expense parent. Use the same category when entering or reviewing related transactions.

Hide or archive unused choices

System category names, parents, and directions are not editable from the household category editor. Use Hide or Show to control their availability for your household.

Custom categories have Archive and Restore actions. Select Include hidden / archived to find categories that are no longer in the normal list. Hiding or archiving a category does not erase its earlier transactions.

Troubleshooting

If a category is missing from a picker, check whether it or its parent is hidden or archived. A budget accepts expense categories, so an income category will not be offered there. Selecting a parent for a budget includes its subcategories; overlapping coverage can prevent saving another budget for the same account and months.
