Import and review transaction files
Preview QIF or CSV files, resolve mappings and matches, then import the reviewed activity.
Overview
Import brings transactions from a file into a selected account. It is a file-review workflow, not an ongoing bank connection. QIF and CSV have separate screens. Previewing does not commit financial transactions, although CSV review work can be saved as your private draft.
Import a CSV file
- Choose the intended active account and select a UTF-8 CSV file within the displayed size limit.
- Choose a saved profile or map the file's columns. Check delimiter, date format, number culture, and default status.
- Select signed amounts or separate debit and credit columns. Use sign inversion only when the file's convention needs it.
- Choose Preview. Review payees, categories, new rows, matches, ignored rows, and anything needing attention.
- Review proposed alias changes and any warning that existing Outstanding entries will become Cleared.
- Confirm the account and reviewed changes, then choose Import. Check the result counts and Ledger afterward.
A saved profile describes file layout, not a guarantee that a new file is identical. Recheck every mapped column if headers change. Alias rules map imported descriptions to payees; review their scope before saving them with the import.
QIF files and saved drafts
On the QIF screen, select the account and file, choose Preview, and review the proposed entries and any opening-balance change before importing.
On CSV Import, Continue an import lets you resume an available saved draft. Drafts are member-private, even within a shared household. Discarding a draft is different from deleting already-imported ledger entries.
Troubleshooting
If Import is disabled, resolve needs-review rows and wait for a fresh preview. An exact replay of an already-imported file is blocked for that account, but this is not a guarantee that every overlapping or edited file contains no duplicates.
If a save or import result is uncertain, inspect the result and Ledger before attempting another import. Check opening balances and matching decisions before adding missing-looking activity a second time.
